An innovation that came in with the Summer 1980 timetable was the introduction of a Summer Sunday train between Harwich Parkeston Quay and Sheffield. There was already a long established train connecting the north with an overnight sailing at Harwich, but this had only run on weekdays.
A summary of the dates of operation for each summer between 1980 and 1983 and locomotives used can be viewed by clicking the links below or to the left. Further information, particularly with regard to the locomotives used in 1980 and 1981 would be welcomed by Peter Hall.
Not only were the trains an out and back working for a GE locomotive, usually a Stratford allocatted Class 47, but also for a set of carriages otherwise only used for GE trains.
From the Summer of 1984 the train was extended to/from Manchester involving a locomotive change at Sheffield. Further details about the train in 1984, 1985, 1986 and its final Summer of 1987, along with a listing of locomotives used, can be viewed by clicking the links below or to the left.
