Photographs of locomotive hauled passenger trains on the line between Gainsborough and Barnetby are extremely rare. Nearly as rare are photographs of locomotive hauled passenger trains that used the route elsewhere on their journey. In the years immediatly prior to May 1976 the line between Gainsborough Trent East Junction and Wrawby Junction, via Gainsborough Central, Kirton Lindsey and Brigg, was served by the daily Manchester Piccadilly - Retford - Grimsby Town / Cleethorpes newspaper train.  From the 3rd May 1976 this train was diverted to run via Lincoln Monday - Saturday and terminate at Retford on Sundays.  At the time these trains were usually hauled by a Class 31/1.   Also, a daily balancing locomotive hauled Cleethorpes / Grimsby Town  - Sheffield train ran, except on Summer Saturdays when it ran via Doncaster.   This train was usually hauled by a Class 40 Monday - Saturday and a Class 31/1 on Sundays.   The Monday - Saturday train continued to run via  Brigg for a further year, Class 40 hauled, after which it was diverted to run via Scunthorpe to Doncaster where it terminated.

Subsequently, few timetabled locomotive hauled trains have run along the line.  The majority being on Summer weekdays in order to accommodate the demands of Cleethorpes day trippers.  Other occurences were when normally DMU worked trains were made locomotive hauled due to the unavailabillty of DMUs.

The summer Weekday trains only ran to any great extent in the Summers of 1979, 1980 and 1981.   Details about these can be found by clicking the links below or at the top of the page,.

Whilst in the Summer of 1983,  on two consecutive days, a pair of normally DMU worked trains were made locomotive hauled due to the large numbers of school children having an end of term treat.  Details of these trains are shown below.  The locomotives used were particularly notable, 31191 was based at Immingham, 31240 at Healey Mills and 31284 at Thornaby, whilst 37097 was based at March.

Instances of other normally DMU worked trains being made locomotive hauled are listed below.  There may have been other occurences, if you are aware of any please contact Peter Hall.

Those in 1983 and 1984 utilised the carriages from the Manchester Piccadilly - Reford - Lincoln - Grimsby/Cleethorpes newspaper train which by then were returning as ecs to Sheffield via Doncaster.   Those in 1992 utilised a set of stock based at Derby that was used to cover for DMU shortages.  40044 was almost certainly the last Class 40 to haul a passenger train along the line, by coincidence it had hauled 1J78 09:40 Cleethorpes - Sheffield on the 30th April 1977, the last day of regular weekday haulage.

Very occasionally trains between Doncaster and Barnetby would be diverted to run via Finningley, Gainsborough Central and Brigg rather than via Scunthorpe.  The only known occurence of a locomotive hauled train being so routed is  shown below.

Taken on 26th July 1966, Class 37 D6799 awaits departure from Platform 2 at Sheffield Midland on 2L38 14:50 Sheffield - Cleethorpes via Brigg. Class 47 D1537 is stood on Platform 1 at the head of 1B21 14:45 Sheffield Midland - London Kings Cross which will depart first. Adrian Booth
