Q18.08. York to Birmingham Services 1960s. During the Winters of 1960/1/2, the York to Bournemouth through service via the Great Central Main Line to Woodford Halse and then Banbury did not run. A replacement DMU service was provided by the North Eastern Region running from York to Banbury and back. Very few if any photographs exist of this service. What type of DMU operated the service, and which depot provided them? (Chris Hollins: 16465)

Answer

The DMUs on the York to Banbury service were provided by Neville Hill, 55H, according to a member’s observations in Leicester. They passed quickly, so there may be errors. In early 1962 (probably February/March), he saw E50244, E59224, E59204, E50578, possibly from two units. On what was probably Thursday 12th April 1962 he managed to note these three (from a train of probably 4 or 8): E50568, E50552, E59097. (Tony Fowkes: 13486)
